The World of James Bond

Do you know that….?

  • James Bond is a fictional character created by British journalist and novelist Ian Fleming in 1953. He is the protagonist of the James Bond series of novels, films, comics and video games. Fleming wrote twelve Bond novels and two short story collections before his death, although the last two books—The Man with the Golden Gun and Octopussy and The Living Daylights—were published posthumously.
  • Fleming took the name for his character from that of the American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbean bird expert; Fleming, a keen birdwatcher himself, had a copy of Bond's guide and he later explained to the ornithologist's wife that "It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born".
  • Sean Connery was the first actor to portray Bond on film in Dr. No (1962)
  • Sean Connery, David Niven, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig played the role in twenty-six feature film productions.
  • Daniel Craig is the incumbent Bond in the long-running Eon series, and played the part for a fourth time in the latest film, Spectre, released in October 2015.
  • A selection of photographs of the cast and crew of SPECTRE are on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
  • Monday 5th October, is official Global James Bond Day – a celebration of 53 years of the Bond franchise. This date marks the anniversary of the release of DR. NO in 1962. This special day of celebrations first began in 2012 when the Bond films celebrated their golden anniversary with events all around the globe and the release of the theme song for SKYFALL by Adele.
